A painting that connects Chiayi City, Taiwan and Hofu City, Yamaguchi Prefecture

"East Taiwan Seaside Road" (1930)
Oil painting (reproduction) by painter Chen Chengbo (1895-1947)

This work is a landscape painting of the east coast of Taiwan painted by Chen Chengbo, a representative oil painter of modern Taiwan, who was born in Chiayi City, Taiwan. Kamiyama Mitsunoshin, who was born in Hofu City and served as the 11th Governor-General of Taiwan, commissioned Chen Chengbo to create it when he resigned as Governor-General in 1928.

Later, in 1940, Kamiyama used his personal fortune to establish the Santetsu Bunko, the predecessor of the current Hofu Library. After his death, his relatives donated his books and other belongings to the Santetsu Bunko, and this oil painting was one of them.

The whereabouts of this oil painting had been unknown for many years, but it was discovered in the warehouse of Hofu Library in 2015. The discovery was made by former Ryukoku University professor Kodama Shiki, a resident of Hofu, who was working on editing a biography of Kamiyama Mitsunoshin at the time.
This discovery brought renewed attention to the work of Chen Chengbo, a beloved Taiwanese painter, in Japan. The surprise and joy shared between Chiayi and Hofu has led to a deep friendship between the two cities.
